Bright Light Therapy

The cause of these symptoms is often a Winter Depression or what is also called a Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

What is a winter depression?
Symptoms of a winter depression often begin in the fall, peak in the winter and usually resolve in the spring. The typical symptoms of the winter blues include depression, lack of energy, increased need for sleep, a craving for food (especially sweets) and weight gain.

In the Netherlands app. 450.000 people suffer from a winter depression or SAD every year. There is an even larger group of 1.200.000 individuals who suffer from a milder version called the winter blues. About 75% of people suffering from SAD are women. The most common age of onset is at the age of thirty.
Often not recognized as SAD or the winterblues, there is simple treatment for this type of depression; Bright Light Therapy.

The influence of daylight
Since the beginning of time people where exposed to a lot of daylight, in summer and winter. Only since the last 100 years people stay inside the house and office during the fall and winter. This means that we receive less daylight. Our biological clock functions on daylight and if some people do not receive enough daylight during the day, this can have a lot of influence on their state of mind.

Treatment of a winter depression
A good treatment for the symptoms of a winter depression is bright light therapy. Research has shown that 50 to 80% has a positive reaction to the treatment with bright light therapy. This type of therapy has some great benefits in comparison to other treatment types;

Applying lighttherapy as a preventional method of a winterdepression

The Philips Bright Light HF 3301 is suitable for taking a lightbath. A sessions of bright light therapy can be adviceable if you have the following symptoms of the winter blues: depression, lack of energy, increased need for sleep, a craving for food (especially sweets) and weight gain.

The advisable duration of the lightbath depends on the selected operational distance:
approx. 2 hours for a distance of approx. 75 cm;
approx. 1 hour for a distance of approx. 50 cm;
approx. 1/2 hour for a distance of approx. 25 cm

If it suits your schedule better, you may interrupt your lightbath and continue it later. Even the 30 minute session may be split into two sessions if you wish.
You may look into the lamps every now and then, not continuously. So you are free to engage in such activities as reading, writing or handiwork, and look into the lamps every now and then.

Usually a therapy duration of 10 days is adviced.
